Clayton man arrested after string of Smyrna area burglaries

SMYRNA — A 26-year-old Clayton man was arrested in alleged connection with multiple burglaries in a two block stretch of Massey Church Road, authorities said.

Vincent M. Zimath was charged with 12 third-degree burglary counts involving the alleged theft of power tools, hand tools, electronics and other miscellaneous property, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Early Thursday morning, police said a resident detained Mr. Zimath after he was allegedly found wearing all dark clothing and a ski mask while in possession of a large bag (including power tools and assorted property.) A brief struggled ensued before Mr. Zimath was held by the resident around 6:05 a.m., police said.

The resident had initially entered his vehicle to find it ransacked and missing property. A detached garage had also been burglarized, according to police, and other items taken.

As the resident was calling 911, police said he heard his dog barking in the backyard. He then went outside and located a person later identified as Mr. Zimath, authorities said.

Police determined that Mr. Zimath had allegedly entered garages, pole barns, pool houses and vehicles at five separate residences.

Following transport to Troop 2, Mr. Zimath was also charged with theft greater than $1,500 (three counts), theft less than $1,500 (four counts), attempted theft less than $1,500) and third-degree criminal trespass (two counts).

Following arraignment in Justice of the Peace Court 2 in Rehoboth Beach, Mr. Zimath was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington in lieu of $43,500 secured bail.

Police asked anyone with information to contact call Detective M. Conway of the Troop 2 Burglary Unit at 365-8427. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online at
