Dover, Smyrna police departments receive bomb threats

DOVER — The Dover and Smyrna police departments reported receiving bomb threats within approximately two minutes of each other Thursday night.

On its Facebook page, Dover Police said it was forced to evacuate the police station at 5:17 p.m. when a bomb threat was received through its 911 center. The 911 center immediately transferred calls to the Kent County Department of Public Safety to avoid loss of services to Dover residents, police said.

The police station was cleared of any threats with assistance from the Delaware State Police and Delaware Capitol Police K9 Units, according to the Dover Police Department.

Afterward, the department said it was beginning to resume normal operations.

Authorities asked anyone with information on the incident, or other threats in the area, to call Dover Police Department at 736-7111.

The Smyrna Police Department said its dispatch center received a bomb threat made via a telephone call at approximately 5:19 p.m. A bomb reportedly was said to be detonating soon in the police building.

The building was evacuated and regional resources were contacted for assistance, police said. Teams from the Delaware State Police K-9 Unit as well as the Dover Air Force Base Security Forces K-9 Unit responded.

These bomb detection K-9 teams searched the property and it was determined there was no credible security threat at the time, police said. Normal Smyrna Police operations resumed.

The incident is being investigated by the Smyrna Police Special Investigations Unit to determine the source of the threat as well as the credibility of it, authorities said. There is no threat to members of the public or the police department as of early Thursday night, police said.

Smyrna Police asked anyone with information on the incident to call 653-9217.
