Dover teen felon arrested for concealed handgun

DOVER — A 17-year-old convicted felon contacted during a loitering investigation was allegedly found with a .380 caliber Bersa handgun and arrested Wednesday night, Dover Police said.

Jalil Scott, of the 400 block of Sussex Avenue, was taken into custody without incident by members of the Dover Police Street Crimes Unit, working with Delaware Probation and Parole, authorities said.

Dover Police spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman said Scott and others were first seen allegedly loitering in front of a vacant residence on the unit block of South New Street.

Charges included carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a deadly weapon by person prohibited, and loitering.

It was not immediately known if the handgun was loaded or other arrests were made, police said. The firearm is now stored by Dover Police as evidence.

Wednesday’s alleged discovery continued a two-year trend of rising handgun seizures, many by convicted felons, Cpl. Hoffman said.

“It seems like we are seeing more handguns being seized than in years past,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

“I do not have official numbers available at this time, but in the last 24 months it appears that we are seeing it more and more, and often in the hands of persons prohibited from having them due to being convicted felons.”
