Fatal crash reported in Milton

MILTON — A 66-year-old man from Harrington was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident in Milton on Saturday, state police said.

According to authorities he was not wearing his seatbelt.

The crash was reported by a passing motorist who noticed a vehicle off the roadway in a field. The preliminary investigation determined that a 2001 Volvo V70 Station Wagon was traveling northbound on Coastal Highway (SR1) approaching the intersection of Truitt Road. After passing Truitt Road, the Station Wagon failed to maintain its lane and exited Coastal Highway just north of Truitt Road, striking a sign post. After impacting the sign post, the Station Wagon continued to travel northeast when it collided with a standing tree in an open field, before coming to rest a short distance from the tree.

As of Saturday, it was unknown if the driver was impaired in any way.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is asked to contact Troop 7, Corporal A. Mitchell at 302-644-5020.
