Fatal Wyoming sidewalk crash brings arrest

WYOMING – A 26-year-old Wyoming man was charged with manslaughter after his vehicle fatally struck a pedestrian on Saturday night, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Driving a Dodge Neon at approximately 8:32 p.m., Bradford J. Husfelt tried to pass a vehicle on the right side, traveled onto a sidewalk and then into a front yard, striking timber before driving partially on the sidewalk and yard, authorities said. A 78-year-old Wyoming man was struck on the sidewalk and succumbed to injuries at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover.

According to police, Mr. Husfelt drove from the scene and was located at his home in the 100 block of Center Street. The Neon was found under a car cover at the residence, police said. Mr. Husfelt was taken into custody without incident.

The victim’s name was withheld pending notification of kin, authorities said.

Other charges included leaving scene of collision resulting in death, hindering prosecution, driving while suspended or revoked, reckless driving, criminal mischief, DUI of a drug, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, driving on sidewalk or bike path prohibited, car involved in death remain at scene for police arrival, failure to report collision resulting in injury or death and following a motor vehicle too closely.

Mr. Husfelt was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown on $58,650 cash only bond.

The roadway was closed for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
