Harrington teen arrested after vehicle theft

HARRINGTON — A 14-year-old female was arrested after allegedly stealing a vehicle Wednesday and leading police on a pursuit, authorities said.

According to Harrington Police spokesman Capt. Earl K. Brode, officers were called to the Royal Farms on Milford-Harrington Highway at approximately 3:28 a.m. for a reported vehicle theft. Police were told that the owner left a vehicle running and unlocked before going inside the store.

An unknown suspect then entered the vehicle and fled, police said. An initial search for the vehicle was unsuccessful, but a Harrington Police officer located it on U.S. 13 south of Camden while heading home from work, according to Capt. Brode.

A pursuit began and continued onto Del. 10 before the vehicle crashed while turning onto Bay Road. The vehicle owner’s legally owned, loaded firearm was located in the vehicle.

Leiarra Burton, of Harrington was taken to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover for treatment for minor injuries, police said. She was then taken to Kent County Family Court.

Charges included theft of a firearm, theft of motor vehicle, disregarding a police officer signal, criminal mischief under $1,000, criminal mischief over $1,000 and several traffic violation. The Burton youth was committed to Stevenson House Juvenile Detention Facility in default of $3,000 secured bond.
