Hartly motorcyclist dies in crash

DOVER — A 27-year-old Hartly man died when his motorcycle slid into the front fender and driver’s side door of a vehicle Wednesday night on Forrest Avenue (Del. 8) at the intersection of Artis Drive, Delaware State Police said.

The man was operating a 2000 Kawasaki motorcycle when a 2013 Mazda MZ3 made a left turn into its path from a stop sign at 10:21 p.m., authorities said.

After impact the Mazda driver drove to a residence on Sharon Hill Road north of the collision scene.

The motorcycle operator was ejected and thrown onto the roadway just north of the area of impact, police said. The Kawasaki motorcycle came to rest in the area of the initial impact, police said.

The Mazda MZ3 driver returned to the crash scene a short time later in another vehicle and identified himself to witnesses as having been involved in the collision, police said.

He was not injured in the collision. This investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, police said.

The operator of the Kawasaki motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, police said. Identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 1/2 hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway was finally cleared.
