Homeless man charged with sexual assault in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN— A 55-year-old homeless man was arrested on a rape charge Thursday following investigation into an alleged incident on Oct. 20, 2018, Georgetown Police Det. Joseph Melvin said.

Initially, police were called to an address on Albury Avenue during the early morning of Oct. 20 and learned that a 19-year-old woman was asleep in her residence when an unknown man entered her bedroom.

The man then entered the woman’s bed and held his hand over her mouth. The woman was able to free herself and began to scream at which time the suspect fled the residence.

Police said Lewis Brittingham was identified as a person of interest and apprehended by Newark Police dispatched to a suspicious person report in the 200 block of Main Street. An unknown man was reportedly on the caller’s apartment balcony, police said.

Mr. Brittingham was charged with second-degree attempted rape and second-degree burglary. He was arraigned and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Center in Wilmington in lieu of $26,000 secured bond.

Curfew violation probe results in drug charges

BRIDGEVILLE — A 36-year-old Bridgeville man was charged with drug offenses following a curfew violation investigation conducted by Delaware State Police and Probation and Parole.

Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said the alleged incident occurred Thursday at 11:04 p.m. Members of the Sussex Governors Task Force and Probation and Parole responded to the 11000 block of Evans Drive to conduct a curfew check on probationer, Maurice Cannon. Troopers observed Mr. Cannon sitting in a vehicle in the driveway, which is a violation of his curfew, police said.

Officers confronted Mr. Cannon in the vehicle and immediately detected a strong odor of marijuana, police said. He was told to exit the vehicle and was allegedly found in possession of a large amount of U.S. currency, marijuana and a small amount of cocaine.

An administrative search was conducted and an additional amount of marijuana was allegedly located inside the vehicle, according to the state police.

Probation Officers then conducted an administrative search of Mr. Cannon’s residence and located 390 bags of heroin, police said. He was taken into custody without incident.

Seized evidence included over $3,000 in suspected drug proceeds, 2.73 grams of heroin (390 bags), 74.52 grams of marijuana, 0.33 grams of powder cocaine and 0.55 grams of crack cocaine.

Charges included third offense possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance in a Tier 2 quantity, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia (three counts).

Mr. Cannon was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 3 in Georgetown and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $90,800 cash only bond.
