Man charged in Dover beating death

DOVER — A 24-year-old man was charged Sunday in the beating death of the mother of his child, Dover police said.

Officers responded to a call about a possible domestic disturbance between a man and three children at a Wawa store at about 5:30 Sunday morning.

Police said that when they arrived, they met a man who provided a false name and varying statements as to why he was in the area with the children.

Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman, a police spokesman, said officers then went to a residence, where they found 23-year-old Naquita Hill, who was suffering from major injuries to her upper body. She was pronounced dead shortly after officers arrived.

The News Journal reports that police believe Aaron Garnett Jr. physically assaulted Ms. Hill during an altercation, causing her death. He has been charged with first-degree murder.

Cpl. Hoffman said Ms. Hill and Mr. Garnett had one child together. He said the other children were being cared for by Ms. Hill for another family member.

“All three children are now in the care of a trusted relative,” Cpl. Hoffman said.

It was not immediately clear when Mr. Garnett would be brought to court for arraignment on the charge.
