Man dies after Dover gunfire exchange

DOVER — A 31-year-old man died after exchanging gunshots with two unknown suspects inside his apartment Tuesday night, Dover Police said..

Javan Cale was shot multiple times in the torso at Clearfield Apartments at approximately 7:40 p.m. He later died from his injuries at Bayhealth Kent-General Hospital.

Police responded to calls for shots fired in the apartment complex, spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said. The incident is under investigation as a homicide.

Authorities said the late Mr. Cale also fired multiple rounds before the suspects fled westbound from the building at 120 Haman Drive.

Police said it was unknown if the suspects were injured, but there was no evidence of it. No details could be released regarding any weapons involved, Cpl. Hoffman said. No information was available on whether other persons were in the apartment at the time of the gunfire.

Mr. Cale lived at the residence, police said. Police are investigating how and why suspects entered the apartment. Their relationship with Mr. Cale was unknown.

• The incident was Dover’s second shooting death in less than three weeks. On Dec. 22, a 52-year-old man was found lying unresponsive with a single gunshot wound in the upper torso in an alley connecting Mitscher and Spruance roads and was pronounced dead hours later.

• On Dec. 23, two brothers from Magnolia were wounded in an alleyway shooting between Sussex Avenue and Collins Drive in the Capital Green neighborhood. They were treated at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital and in stable condition afterward.
