Man from Bear, DE dies in kite boarding accident near Dewey

DEWEY BEACH – A 48-year-old man from Bear, Delaware died Friday in a kite boarding accident near Dewey Beach.

According to Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe, the victim had met with his father at the Towers Bay area of Delaware Seashore State Park off Coastal Highway south of Dewey Beach, and was practicing kite boarding, using only the harness and kite with no board while standing in the water.

Due to heavy winds, the man was pulled farther and farther out into deeper water.

The father called 911 and Delaware Fish & Wildlife Natural Resource Police initiated a search of the area.

At approximately 1:37 p.m., Delaware Fish & Wildlife Natural Resource Police located the man deceased along the shore south of the original location, Cpl. Jaffe said.

The victim’s name was not immediately released.

The Delaware Division of Forensic Science is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, Cpl. Jaffe said.
