Police release name of New Jersey man killed in crash

MILTON – A 48-year-old New Jersey man died early Monday morning in a one-vehicle crash in Milton.

The crash occurred about 12:40 a.m., July 29 involving a 2017 Chevrolet Impala operated by George D. Berkowitz of Hamburg, New Jersey.

Delaware State Police investigation determined the Impala was eastbound on Chestnut Street at an excessive speed, well above the posted 25 mph limit, approaching the intersection with Church Street.

The vehicle went off the road and struck a large tree. Mr. Berkowitz, who was not properly restrained, was ejected before the vehicle struck the tree, state police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Mr. Berkowitz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Debris from the vehicle struck the occupied residence. None of the occupants in the residence were injured, Cpl. Jaffe said.

Chestnut Street was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
