New Jersey man dies in Harbeson crash

HARBESON – A 79-year-old New Jersey man died and a passenger critically injured Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash near Harbeson.

The crash occurred at about 4:32 p.m. Aug. 30 involving a Subaru Outback, driven by the New Jersey man, John R. Acken, and a Volvo Tractor towing an enclosed box-style trailer, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Investigation determined the Outback was westbound on Beaver Dam Road when the driver failed to stop at posted signage at the intersection of Indian Mission Road, which is a throughway. Upon entering intersection, the Outback was struck by the Volvo tractor, Cpl. Jaffe said.

Mr. Acken was pronounced dead at Beebe Medical Center.

A female passenger in the Subaru was transported to the Christiana Hospital in critical condition, Cpl. Jaffe said.

The operator of the tractor trailer, a 33-year-old Pennsylvania man, was treated for minor injuries and released from Beebe Medical Center, Cpl. Jaffe said.

Indian Mission Road in the area of Beaver Dam Road was closed for approximately 5 1/2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction
