Police: Appliance business scam under investigation

OCEAN VIEW — The Delaware State Police Financial Crimes Unit is investigating a business in which customers allegedly purchased appliances and the items have not been received.

The investigation began in the beginning of February, when troopers were made aware of an incident in which a customer purchased appliances from Coastal Maytag at 30459 Cedar Neck Road and the items were never delivered, spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Further investigation revealed that numerous customers have purchased appliances in which they either have paid in full or in part and have not received the merchandise or any type of refund. To date, a total of approximately 30 fraudulent complaints have been filed with DSP regarding Coastal Maytag, police said.

Coastal Maytag remains closed at this time. The case continues to remain under investigation by the DSP Troop 4, Financial Crimes Unit. There have been no charges filed at this time. Detectives will be working in conjunction with the Attorney General’s Office in reference to this case.

DSP asked that if you believe you are a victim of this crime to attempt to report your case by May 1 to Detective McCabe at 856-5850. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online at delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
