Police: woman points loaded gun at ex-tenant

Melanie Ballard

SMYRNA — A 44-year-old Smyrna woman was arrested Wednesday after she allegedly pointed a loaded handgun at her former tenant, Delaware State Police said.

Spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said the alleged incident occurred at approximately 3:32 p.m. when troopers were dispatched to the 400 block of S. Carter Road for a trespass complaint. Upon arrival, it was learned that the 44-year-old man had responded to the residence to turn over his keys, police said.

A disagreement ensued between man and Melanie Ballard, police said. Ms. Ballard allegedly proceeded to display a handgun and pointed it at the man, police said, causing him to fear for his life.

Ms. Ballard was taken into custody without incident, and recovered from the scene was a loaded Glock 22 .40 caliber handgun. She was transported to Troop 9 where she was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and aggravated menacing. Ms. Ballard was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 2 in Rehoboth Beach and released on $25,000 unsecured bond.
