Racial slurs spray-painted on buses, cars in Lewes area

LEWES — A suspect or suspects are being sought by police after spray-painted profane and racial slurs were reported in several locations throughout the Lewes area, authorities said Monday.

Delaware State Police said the criminal mischief occurred on two buses parked near Cape Henlopen High, on a forklift and mobile office trailer located behind Midway Movie Theater, five vehicles located at Boulevard Ford on Coastal Highway, a privately owned vehicle located in Heritage Village on Bethpage Drive, and an abandoned trailer behind Midway Outlets.

The graffiti was believed to have been spray-painted sometime from last Friday to early Monday morning.

A photo of graffiti on the Cape Henlopen buses was circulated on social media Monday, and the district issued a statement in the afternoon.

“This morning we were made aware of a vandalism incident with one of our Cape Henlopen School District buses which we believe occurred sometime late last night,” Cape Superintendent Robert Fulton said. “As soon as we were made aware of it State Police were contacted and a report was made.

“We find this type of behavior to be reprehensible and it does not in any way reflect the view of our District. Please know that we will be fully cooperating with the State Police during their investigation.

“We thank you for your patience during this time while the State Police continue to look into the person responsible for this act.”

Police asked anyone with information to contact Troop 7 at 644-5020. Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, or online at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.

The incident was the second in two weeks involving inflammatory language connected to a high school. Last week, two Caesar Rodney High students were suspended after a photo of the school Rider mascot holding a piece of paper with a racially charged messaged was posted online while drawing wide attention.
