Three arrests follow Laurel warrant attempt

LAUREL — Three arrests followed a warrant attempt Monday, and drugs and drug paraphernalia were located, Delaware State Police said.

According to spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe, the alleged incident occurred at approximately 9:35 p.m. when members of the Sussex County Governor’s Task Force responded to the 29000 block of Discount Land Road, to conduct a warrant attempt for 42-year-old Richie Hurley. Richie Hurley is a Level 3 probation absconder and was wanted on a capias from Superior Court for Failure to Appear for Drug Court, police said.

As an officer began to approach the side door of the residence, police said, a man, identified as 23-year-old Dwayne Hurley of Bridgeville, exited the residence and suddenly turned away and ran back inside when he discovered the police presence. A brief chase ensued and subsequently officers were able to take Dwayne Hurley into custody inside the residence, police said. A search of Dwayne Hurley revealed he was in possession of cocaine, police said.

Richie Hurley was located in the residence and was taken into custody without incident due to his wanted status, police said. He was found in possession of suspected drug proceeds, police said.

While inside the residence, officers observed drug paraphernalia and a children’s “Paw Patrol” bag, police said. Upon opening the bag, officers discovered a large quantity of cocaine as well as other narcotics and drug paraphernalia, police said.

While searching the rest of the residence for additional persons, officers discovered a 24-year-old man from Delmar hiding in the garage.

Police said evidence was seized during the investigation, including:

• Approximately 57.08 grams of cocaine

• 31 15mg Oxycodone pills

• 9 .5mg Alprazolam pills

• 16 bags of heroin

• 2 Suboxone film strips

• Approximately 0.08 grams of amphetamine

• 2 digital scales

• Numerous items of drug storage paraphernalia

• Over $1,700 in suspected drug proceeds

All three suspects were transported back to Troop 4 and arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 3.

Richie Hurley was charged with drug dealing cocaine in a Tier 4 quantity, possession of cocaine in a Tier 5 quantity, drug dealing Oxycodone in a Tier 2 quantity, possession of a controlled substance (Alprazolam), possession of a controlled substance (Suboxone), possession of a controlled substance (heroin), possession of a controlled substance (amphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia (three counts). He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $127,750 cash only bond.

Dwayne Hurley was charged with hindering prosecution, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on $2,000 unsecured bond.

The Delmar man was charged with resisting arrest and released on $500 unsecured bond.
