Two women arrested on robbery, other charges

BLADES – Two Sussex County women were arrested and jailed in connection with a robbery during which they allegedly sprayed a man in his eyes with a chemical and took his wallet, according to Delaware State Police.

Nicole B. Griffith, 30, of Laurel and Jamie E. Hawkins, 24, of Seaford face several charges in the robbery, which occurred July 27 just before noon at a residence in the 8000 block of Concord Road, state police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

Troopers responding to the robbery report were told by the 50-year-old male resident that two women came to his residence and demanded money. The man told police he knew one of the women, Nicole Griffith, who continued to request money, claiming to be the mother of one of his children, Cpl. Jaffe said.

Griffith and Hawkins then sprayed the victim in his eyes with a chemical and struck him when one of the suspects removed his wallet from his pocket.

The two women fled the scene with the wallet that contained an undisclosed amount of cash, Cpl. Jaffe said.

The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated and cleared on scene by medical personnel.

On Aug. 1 at approximately 10:30 a.m., Griffith and Hawkins were taken into custody at the Sunrise Motel on Sussex Highway in Seaford without incident.  They were transported to Troop 5 where they were charged with: Robbery First Degree; Assault Second Degree; Conspiracy Second Degree; Theft; Offensive Touching and Criminal Trespass.

Griffith and Hawkins were arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and both committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $63,150 cash only bond.
