A full slate of games is on tap today as the American Legion baseball state tournament kicks off at Wilson Field in New Castle.
Three downstate teams made the eight-team field.

Fox Post-2 will play at 6 p.m. against the tournament hosts and No. 3 seed Stahl Post-30. Fox Post-2 tied with the Post-10 Generals with 30 points in the overall standings but was awarded the sixth seed based on run differential.

Fox Post-2, the Dover-area squad, went 10-7 during the regular season. Stahl Post-30 finished the summer 12-10 and ended up with 36 points.

CKFT Post-7 Harrington also made the field from Kent County. It had nine points to earn the eighth and final seed.

Post-7 Harrington plays at 3 p.m. against Delaware Post-1, the top seed and defending tournament champion.

Nanticoke Post-6 Patriots round out the field as the final downstate representative. Nanticoke Post-6 is seeded seventh and will square off against Canal Post-25 Middletown, the tournament’s second seed, at noon.

The other game of the day features Delvets Post-1, the fourth seed, against the Post-10 Generals, the fifth seed. That game opens the tournament at 9 a.m.

Smyrna Post-14 (six points) and R.C. du Pont Post-18 (zero points) were the only two teams who did not make the tournament.
All games will be played at Wilson Field.

For the first time all games will be seven innings. In previous years the tournament featured nine-inning contests.
It will still follow the double-elimination format.

If Fox Post-2 wins its first-round matchup, it will play at 6 p.m. on Sunday against the winner of Canal Post-25 Middletown vs. Nanticoke Post-6. If it loses it will play at noon on Sunday against the loser of the same game.

Post-7 Harrington will either play at 9 a.m. Sunday if it loses or at 3 p.m. if it wins. It will play the winner or loser of the Delvets Post-1 vs. Post-10 Generals matchup.

Game times for Monday are 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the consolation bracket while the winners bracket final is at 5 p.m. Tuesday has two games scheduled with one at noon and the other at 4 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. If need be, a second championship game will be played at 5 p.m. if both remaining teams only have one loss.

The tournament winner will advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament the following week.

Delaware Post-1 is the two-time defending tournament champion. Fox Post-2 is the last downstate squad to reach the final, two years ago in 2016.

However, Fox Post-2 has not won the championship since 2003.

The tournament is being played under American League rules — no re-entry, designated hitter for the pitcher and no courtesy runners.
