Hens pick up transfer QB from App State

One of the big questions hanging over the Delaware football program was whether new coach Danny Rocco would bring in a transfer to compete for the starting quarterback job.

Apparently that question was answered on Thursday when Appalachian State QB J.P. Caruso announced he was transferring to UD.

With the Mountaineers — who Delaware faced in the NCAA I-AA national championship game — now in FBS Division I, Caruso will be eligible to play right away for the Blue Hens. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior from Palm Beach Garden, Fla. will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“So blessed to start the next chapter of my life at The University of Delaware where I will use my final two collegiate years getting my MBA and playing football!” Caruso wrote on Twitter. “Thank you App State for everything. Will miss my brothers on the team the most and the memories we shared, but I’ll cherish them forever! UD Lets Get It!”

Caruso played in 14 games as a backup to starter Taylor Lamb in his App State career. He completed 14-of-18 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns while running 31 times for 187 yards and a TD.

In high school, Caruso threw for 2,169 yards and 21 touchdowns over his final two seasons at Palm Beach Gardens.

Delaware still has two-year starting QB Joe Walker, who will be a redshirt junior this fall. After spring practice, Rocco said Walter was still the starter.

Walker’s backup is redshirt-sophomore Pat Kehoe, who has yet to see any game action with the Hens.

Rocco has said he would always have an open mind torward bringing in transfers, depending on the situation.

“I don’t want to take a guy just to take a guy,” Rocco said after the spring game. “I want to take the best guys that are out there — that help fill our needs and increase the probability of us winning this year. But the reality is, it’s not the NFL draft. It’s not, ‘We want that guy, let’s go get him.’”
