Smyrna High field hockey’s Brynn Rifino was voted by readers as the Week 5 Delaware State News Athlete of the Week for her performance on the field.

Rifino, in her first season as the varsity goalkeeper for Smyrna field hockey, had a 23-save performance against powerhouse Delmar High on Oct. 1. She faced a barrage of 32 shots against the Wildcats in the loss.

She capped the week with eight saves in a 2-0 shutout over Milford on Oct. 3.

She’s recorded three shutouts in goal this year, including a 0-0 tie with Dover on Sept. 26. She reeled in 15 saves for the Eagles (6-3-1) against the Senators.

Smyrna’s senior linebacker Darryl “Debo” Williams came in a close second, with Caesar Rodney High boys’ soccer star Lyod Coutilien and Dover High’s star running back Vonnie Peace also receiving votes. It was Peace’s second consecutive nomination.
