Athlete of the Week: Leila Sebastian, Smyrna High School

Smyrna High field hockey’s Leila Sebastian was voted by readers as the Week 8 Delaware State News Athlete of the Week for her performance on the field.

Sebastian, a senior defender, has been key to the success of the Eagles’ back line this season.

The leader of the defensive unit, Sebastian uses her block tackles to keep opposing players outside of the circle and away from the goal cage.

The Eagles picked up a 4-2 win over Sussex Central High last week before wrapping up the season with a pair of games this week. The Eagles finished with a 9-5-1 record, including three shutouts, for the second straight season.

Sebastian earned more than half the votes to become the third Smyrna field hockey player to earn the award this season.

Dover football players Elijah Allen and Akil Garrett also received votes. Allen tossed for more than 200 yards and a trio of touchdowns, while his teammate Garrett ran for 40 yards and made five tackles with two interceptions, including the game-sealing pick in double overtime, as the Senators defeated Sussex Tech High, 30-27, on Oct. 25.
