Blue-Gold Football Game moving to Friday night in 2019; Riders’ Candeloro to coach Gold

NEWARK — The DFRC Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game is moving to Friday night.

Next year’s contest will be played on Friday, June 21 at Delaware Stadium, the Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens with intellectual disABILITIES announced on Friday. Kickoff will be at 6:30 p.m. and opening ceremonies begin at 5:30 p.m.

The two squad’s coaching staffs were also announced on Friday with Caesar Rodney’s Dan Candeloro named the head coach of the Gold squad.

Candeloro has selected Brian Berns, also from Caesar Rodney, Jed Bell from Woodbridge, Blair Newman from First State Military, Shaun Strickland from Milford and Michael Tkach of Cape Henlopen as his assistant coaches.

Matt Carre from McKean will be the Blue squad head coach. Carre has selected Shakir Ali and Jerome Wilmore, also from McKean, John Barr from A.I. du Pont, Marvin Dooley from St. Elizabeth and Dan Ritter from Howard to assist him for the 2019 game.

Dooley will also serve as Camp Director, along with Preston Grace, an assistant at Woodbridge, John Wilson (St. Georges) and Frank Moffett (Hodgson) as the Assistant Camp Directors. Jody Russell will serve as the DFRC Blue-Gold Athletic Committee Chair for 2019.

The rosters for the game will be announced at a later date.

The Blue and Gold squads consist of senior players chosen from across Delaware as students of outstanding character who are also exceptional football players. The game showcases the DFRC’s Hand-in-Hand buddies and Delaware’s top high school students who participate as football players, cheerleaders, band members, and school ambassadors.

It will be the 64th time this annual event will take place. Proceeds from the game are used to support programs for individuals with intellectual disABILITIES throughout Delaware.
