Roundup: Caesar Rodney girls earn No. 2 seed in Div I soccer tourney

Caesar Rodney High earned the No. 2 seed in the Division I girls’ soccer tournament as pairings were announced on Wednesday night.

The Riders were one of six Henlopen Conference teams to make the postseason.

Polytech, Sussex Tech and Cape Henlopen also made the eight-team Division I tournament. Indian River and Sussex Academy qualified for the 12-team Division II tournament.

Wilmington Charter is the top seed in Division I while Caravel Academy is No. 1 in Division II.

Caesar Rodney will play No. 7 Appoquinimink in the first round Thursday, May 23 at Smyrna High (8 p.m.) That game will follow Polytech, the sixth seed, against No. 3 Padua, which kicks off at 6 p.m. at Smyrna.

Sussex Tech earned the fifth seed and plays Middletown at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22 hosted by Caesar Rodney. The second game of that doubleheader is No. 8 Cape Henlopen against top seed Wilmington Charter at 8 p.m.

Indian River is the fourth seed in the Division II tournament. It will play the winner of Sanford-Mount Pleasant on Wednesday, May 22 at 6 p.m. at Smyrna.

Sussex Academy is seeded sixth and has a first round game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Caravel against the 11th seed Conrad. The winner plays No. 3 Tower Hill at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23 at Caravel.

Smyrna 1, Newark 0: Hannah Osborne’s first half goal was the difference as the Eagles won their season finale.

Kelly Barr assisted on the goal. Smyrna wrapped up the year with a 9-6 overall.

Sussex Tech 4, Sussex Central 0: Four different Ravens scored in the Henlopen North win.

Nicolette Phillips and Allison Beard netted a goal each in the first half before Hannah Murphy and Alicia Eguiluz both contributed a goal in the second half.

Milford 2, Laurel 1: The Buccaneers recorded a one-goal victory in the final game of the season.

Seaford 4, Arcadia, Va. 0: The Blue Jays had three goals in the first half for a nonconference victory.

Baseball

Delmarva Christian 10, Laurel 5: Connor Lewis had three hits including a double to pace the Royals.

Joe Jones triple for Delmarva Christian while Michael Briggs, Riley Culver and Andrew Workman also had doubles.

Dalton Perdue and Holden Deihm each had three-hit games for Laurel.

Delmar 4, Chincoteague, Va. 1: Dylan Pasta recorded three hits to lift the Wildcats in the nonconference matchup.

Ryan Nelson tossed a complete game for Delmar and scattered five hits.

Delaware Military Academy 11, Smyrna 0: The Eagles dropped a nonconference contest at home on Wednesday.

Boys’ lacrosse

Dover 16, Sussex Tech 2: The Senators finished the regular season with an 8-7 record.

College baseball

Florida A&M 13, Delaware State 3: The Rattlers had 14 hits and capitalized on four Hornet errors in the first game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.

Tommy Jordan (Milford High) and John Weglarz went a combined 5-for-6 to lead DelState. Miguel Rivera (Polytech High) knocked in two runs and Jared Gillis (Smyrna High) had one RBI.
