Roundup: CR girls’ soccer team blanks Smyrna 8-0

Aleya Cummings scored five times as the Caesar Rodney High girls’ soccer team defeated Smyrna High 8-0 in a Henlopen Conference Northern Division contest on Thursday night.

Lynsy Gruwell netted a pair of goals while providing three assists. Macy Ramsey had the other goal for the Riders who improved to 3-1.

Cape Henlopen 2, Polytech 0: Brooke Hollingsworth and Kassidy Ostan scored as the Vikings earned a shutout victory in Henlopen North action.

Lake Forest 6, Laurel 0: Alyssa Santore scored a pair of goals to help the Spartans remain undefeated at 3-0 on the year.

Delmar 9, Sussex Academy 0: Logan Walls had five goals for the Wildcats while Mackenzie Niblett chipped in a pair.

Ash Hastings and Ashlyn Carr also netted a goal apiece for Delmar.

College baseball

Hens’ schedule adjusted: Due to a rainy forecast for the Long Island area, the University of Delaware and Hofstra University have altered the schedule for their Colonial Athletic Association weekend baseball series at HU’s University Field.

The teams will now play a doubleheader today beginning at noon and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m. The original schedule had the teams playing single games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Delaware (18-11, 1-5 CAA) enters the game coming off a 4-2 win at La Salle on Tuesday. Last weekend, Delaware won one of three games vs. CAA foe James Madison at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Hofstra (8-21, 1-4 CAA), coming off an 11-4 win at St. Peter’s on Thursday, took one of three games in CAA play from Towson this past weekend.

Blue Hen sophomore RHP Ron Marinaccio (5-1, 3.95 ERA) is scheduled to pitch Friday’s opener with freshman LHP Brandon Walter (3-3, 3.46 ERA) scheduled to take the hill in the nightcap.

College tennis

Hornets win seventh in a row: The Delaware State women’s tennis team has now won seven straight matches after a 5-2 victory over Lafayette at the Northwood Racquet Club Wednesday.

The Hornets won four of the six singles matches and captured the doubles point by winning two of the three contests.

In the singles competition, Elvira Galieva, Maria Rachi, Aayushi Chouhan and Colleen Beck posted straight set wins.

Galieva was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Rocine Moschella in the No. 3 contest, while Rachi upended Megan Reiling 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Galieva has won six straight singles contests and has dropped just two games in her last nine sets.

Chouhan and Beck were 6-2, 6-2 winners at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Galieva and Beck also teamed up for a 6-0 victory in the No. 3 doubles match.

Rachi and Milan Graves pulled out a 7-6 win in the No. 2 doubles contest.

College equestrian

DSU’s Brooke honored: Delaware State University senior Brooke Moore (Dover) has been named to the 2016 National Collegiate Equestrian Association All-America First Team, becoming the second rider in school history to earn the honor. Moore is one of four collegians nationwide to receive first team recognition in the discipline of Horsemanship. She joins Breann Huyett as the only Hornets named to the NCEA All-America First Team. Huyett was honored for Reining in 2012.

Also, Delaware State sophomore Hayley Anderson (New Boston, N.H.) received 2016 NCEA All-America Honorable Mention recognition in Equitation over Fences.

Moore’s 2015-16 season has been highlighted by Most Outstanding Performer awards for Horsemanship in competitions against nationally-ranked SMU and Tennessee-Martin. She also had winning rides in Hornet victories over defending champ South Carolina, SMU and New Mexico State.
