COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Wesley College softball team crushes St. Joseph

The Wesley College softball team topped St. Joseph (Conn.), 14-5, on Sunday to open the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Wesley (4-2) scored a run in every inning and tallied 17 hits. Eight of the nine starters for Wesley registered a hit in the run-rule win.

Bianca Newsom and Ashley Royer both went 4-for-4 while Royer scored four times, drove in three runs and smacked two doubles. Newsom recorded four RBI and three runs scored, including hitting an inside-the-park three-run home run.

Brandi Dalious (Polytech), Dori Loukopoulos and Karina Cardona each picked up two hits. Cardona knocked in four runs. Amanda Curry came around to score three times for the Wolverines.

Loukopoulos collected her third win on the mound, only allowing one earned run and four hits in three innings.

Delaware 4, Ohio 2: Blue Hen pitcher Sarah Piening escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the seventh as Delaware held on for the win at the Liberty Classic.

Centerfielder Ali Davis fired to third baseman Sarah Bessel, who threw out Alexa Holland at the plate to end the game.

Piening picked up her third victory after allowing two runs on five hits for the Hens (4-14). Anna Steinmetz finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.

Baseball

Delaware 7, Monmouth 6: Redshirt freshman Chance DiFebbo drove in the winning run with two out on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the eighth.

Senior James Meeker, who started for the Blue Hens (8-5) at designated hitter, stranded the bases loaded in the ninth with one out to earn his second save of the series.

Calvin Scott hit his first home run of the season and reached base four times (three walks), scoring the winning run. Centerfielder Kevin Mohollen went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Andrew Reich recorded a pair of hits.

Hornets drop two: Fairleigh Dickinson downed Delaware State 3-0 and 5-4 on Sunday to complete a sweep of the four-game weekend series.

The Hornets (2-12) have now lost 10 games in a row. Three of the last four losses have come by just one run.

Women’s lacrosse

Gardner Webb 16, Delaware State 3: Jasmine West matched her career-high with two goals and Lauren Perry notched her third goal of the season to account for Delaware State’s scoring in the loss.
