Dover earns bye, four Henlopen Conference teams make football tournaments

Four downstate teams made the DIAA football state tournament brackets that were announced on Sunday morning.

Dover High (9-1) earned the second seed in Division I by the tourney point system and has a first-round bye. Henlopen North champion Sussex Central also made the six-team tournament as the third seed.

The Golden Knights (9-1) will host sixth-seeded Appoquinimink (6-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals. No. 4 Middletown (8-2) will host No. 5 Salesianum (8-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the other Division I quarterfinal.

The Senators, who are in the tourney for the first time since 2013, will host a semifinal contest on Friday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Dover will host the highest-remaining seed.

Flight A champion Hodgson (10-0) is the No. 1 seed and will host the lowest-remaining seed on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 11 a.m.

The Division I state title game will be played on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Delaware Stadium at 1 p.m.

Woodbridge and Delmar are the two Henlopen Conference squads in the eight-team Division II field.

Henlopen South champion Woodbridge (8-2) is seeded fourth and will host No. 5 Howard (8-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals. Delmar (9-1), the defending Division II state champion, earned the sixth seed and plays at No. 3 Archmere (9-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the other Division II quarterfinals, top-seeded A.I. DuPont (9-0) hosts eighth-seeded Tower Hill (8-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. while No. 2 Wilmington Friends (8-1) will face seventh-seed Delaware Military Academy (7-3) on Saturday at Baynard Stadium at 1 p.m.

The two top-remaining seeds will host the two lowest-remaining seeds on Nov. 23 or 24. The Division II finals are slated for Dec. at Delaware Stadium at 6 p.m.
