Sanford defeats Dover 48-45 for boys’ basketball state championship

The Dover High boys’ basketball team came up just short in its quest for its first state championship.

Sanford scored the final four points of the game to win 48-45 over the Senators on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark.

Elijah Allen had given the Senators the lead with a layup and a free throw with :59 seconds left. Jyare Davis then put Sanford ahead for good with a putback with 29 seconds remaining.

Corey Perkins then added a layup after a steal for Sanford.

Allen paced Dover with 19 points. Eden Davis added 11.

Dover was attempting to finish the season unbeaten. Dover entered at 24-0 overall as the tournament’s second seed.

The Senators were winless in four state championship games in their history entering the contest — against Wilmington in 1972, Brandywine in 1977, Glasgow in 2003 and Sanford in 2010.
