DSU men, women hoop teams fall in head coaches’ debuts

Isaac Fleming and Seth LeDay each scored 12 points and East Carolina beat Delaware State 81-56 on Tuesday night.

It featured two new head coaches in DSU’s Eric Skeeters and ECU’s Joe Dooley.

Saleik Edwards led Delaware State with six 3-pointers and a career-high 22 points.

Skeeters, in his first collegiate head coaching job, was an assistant last year at Maryland-Baltimore County — the 16-seed that upset No. 1 Virginia in the NCAA Tournament. He’ll be looking to improve a 4-28 team that finished last in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

East Carolina pulled away by out-scoring the Hornets 44-27 in the second half.

Jonathan Mitchell chipped in nine points and seven rebounds for Delaware State while Montrell Horsey scored seven. Amir Bennett and Fahim Jenneto added five points apiece.

Temple 75, Delaware State 61: The Owls scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed as the Hornets dropped the season-opening game in Philadelphia.

It was David Caputo’s first game as head coach at Delaware State.

Temple shot 41 percent from the field and held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint. The Hornets only hit 34 percent of their shots.

Temple led by as much as 23 points in the second half.

Najai Pollard paced the Hornets with 19 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Lanayja Ashe and Genell Addison also finished in double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.
