Eight Henlopen teams make softball tournament

A total of eight downstate teams – over half the Henlopen Conference – had made the 16-team field for the DIAA softball state tournament that was announced today.

Conference champion Smyrna headed that group as the No. 2 seed in the tourney.

The tournament opens on Saturday with eight first-round matchups.

In games involving downstate squads, No. 16 Milford (9-9) plays at No. 1 Caravel (14-3) at 1 p.m.; No. 8 Sussex Central (13-5) hosts No. 9 St. Georges (11-6) at 1 p.m.; No. 12 Delmar (11-7) faces No. 5 Newark Charter (14-3) at Midway Softball Complex at 3 p.m.; No. 2 Smyrna (17-1) hosts No. 15 Polytech (11-7) at 11 a.m.; No. 7 Indian River (13-5) hosts No. 10 Lake Forest (12-6) at 11 a.m.; and No. 6 Sussex Tech (16-2) hosts No. 11 Wilmington Charter (11-7) at 1 p.m.

Milford is the defending state champion.

The tourney continues with the quarterfinals on May 22, the semifinals on May 24 and the finals on May 26.
