Five Henlopen teams in football tourney; Dover left out

DOVER – Five Henlopen Conference football teams made the fields for the DIAA Division I and II state tournaments that were determined on Sunday.

But one of those squads was not Dover, which was left out of the six-team Division I field.

Sallies and Dover tied for the final at-large berth by the DIAA points system with the Sals taking the spot based on its 42-20 win over the Senators on Sept. 14. There was some question about whether a Sals’ out-of-state opponent was Division I or II.

Dover won its last four games to finish 6-4. The Senators were trying to make the state tourney for the second year in a row.

In Division I, No. 3 Smyrna (8-2) will host No. 6 Salesianum (6-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Eagles downed the Sals, 18-10, during the regular season.

In the other first-round matchup, also on Friday, No. 4 Sussex Central (8-2) – the defending Division I state champion – will host No. 5 Concord (6-4) at 7 p.m.

In Division II on Friday, top-seeded Woodbridge (9-1) will host No. 8 Wilmington Friends (7-2) at 7 p.m. in the first round – a rematch of last year’s title game – while No. 2 Delmar (8-2) hosts No. 7 Lake Forest (8-2) at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, No. 4 Howard (9-1) will face No. 5 Archmere (8-2) at Caravel at 7 p.m. with No. 3 Tower Hill (8-1) hosting No. 6 Caravel at 2 p.m.

The Division I semifinals have No. 2 Middletown (9-1) hosting the highest-remaining seed with top-seeded Hodgson (10-0) hosting the lowest-remaining seed on Nov. 23 at 10:30 p.m.

In the Division II semis, the two highest-remaining seeds will host the two lowest-remaining seeds on Nov. 22 or 23.

The championship games will be played on Nov. 30 in a doubleheader at Delaware Stadium. The Division I title game will be played at 1 p.m. with the Division II finals at 6 p.m.

Also, the Unified state championship contest will be played at 4 p.m.
