Golden Knights lead at Milford Invitational wrestling tourney

MILFORD — Sussex Central placed semifinalists in 11 of the 14 weight classes to head the field at the first day of the Milford Wrestling Invitational on Friday night.

The Golden Knights totaled 92.50 points to edge host Milford, which garnered 90 team points for top spot among the 13-team field.

The semifinals are scheduled for this morning at 11 a.m. The championship round will be at 5 p.m.

Milford, last year’s meet champion, has 10 wrestlers remaining while Smyrna had eight left. The Eagles are third in the team standings with 78 points.

Sussex Central was paced by Javon Saffold (106 pounds), Yony Perez (113), Junior Perez (120), Rashad Stratton (126), Drew Morris (138), Max Tolson (152), Blake Chambers (160), Brandon Bautista (170), Yunior Cruz (182), Lucas Hudson (195) and Josh Morris (220), who all advanced. Hudson is a defending title winner at this invitational.

The Buccaneers have three defending champions from this meet who all advanced on Friday night. That list includes Robbie Rosser (113), Alex Creasey (145) and Dom Hovington (220).

Steve Hickman (120), Gavin Garcia (132), Oscar Rosario (138), Kaje Reynolds (170), Bevensky Augustin (182), Eric Bennett (195) and Bryan Wynes (285) earned semifinal berths on Friday night for Milford.

Smyrna advanced Cole Sebastianelli (126), Greg Baum (132), Chase Archangelo (145), Nate Bryant (152), Dakota Kerr (160), Masen Wilson (170), Tony Wuest (195) and Andrew DeBenedictis (220).

Woodbridge sent three wrestlers to the semifinals — Jerome Cannon (106), Robert Boyer (126) and Michael Veasey (182).

Delmar has a pair of wrestlers still alive. Isaac O’Neal advanced in the 106-pound bracket while Jammell Copes moved on at 120.

Jordan Springer (285) is the lone wrestler to make the semifinals from Lake Forest.

Dover and Caesar Rodney, two teams who finished in the top-five at last year’s meet, are not participating this year. Dover is competing in the Scorpion Duals in Oakland Mills, Maryland this weekend while Caesar Rodney is at the Mule Classic at Solanco High in Pennsylvania.

Other non-Henlopen Conference schools in the Milford Invitational this year include Salesianum, Wilmington Charter, Middletown, Delaware Military Academy, Appoquinimink, Delcastle and Newark Charter.
