Indian River Football Preview: Indians looking to continue improvement

The Indian River High football team tripled its win total from 2017 to 2018.

With 14 returning starters, more improvement could be in the cards for the Indians in 2019.

Indian River enters the new football season coming off a 3-7 performance a year ago, one year removed from going 1-9. Indian River kicks off the season on Friday when it hosts Milford High at 7 p.m.

The Indians finished fifth in the Henlopen Conference Southern Division in 2018 but could take the next step with their veteran core.

Indian River has a group of eight returning senior starters. That group is led by two-way lineman Ramond Turner, a standout offensive and defensive lineman.

Other seniors back for one more year include A.J. Bordeau (RB/DB), Nicholas Angelo (RB/DB), Tajon Knight (RB/DB), R.J. Rybicki (FB/LB), Jodiah Morris (FB/DE), Jaquan Floyd (OL/DL) and T.J. Moore (OL/LB).

The other returning starters include juniors River Vickers (RB/LB), Lucas Weber (WR/DE) and Chris Cruz (OL/DL) while sophomores T.J. Burke (OL/DL), Dalton Hall (FB/LB) and Jack Williamson (OL/DL) got valuable experience while playing as freshman in 2018.

Some key newcomers for the Indians are quarterbacks Reagan Dunn, a junior who can play at defensive back, and sophomore Reece Stone.

Junior Jalen Holland-Holloway (RB/DB) has joined the varsity team as have sophomores Colby Willey (TE/DE), Ryan Sheerer (WR/DB) and Clifton Toomey (OL/DL).

Indian River sports a strong nonconference schedule with three games of its four nonconference contest against Division I opponents (Milford, Polytech and Sussex Central), giving the Indians ample opportunities to earn bonus points in the state tournament point-index. The Indians also play a road game at St. Elizabeth to round out their nonconference slate.
