FELTON — After a down season in 2016, the Lake Forest High football team doubled its win total a year ago.

Now the Spartans are looking for another bounceback season with a more experienced squad.

Two years removed from back-to-back Henlopen Conference Southern Division titles, Lake Forest has gone 2-8 and 4-6 over the last two seasons. The Spartans are looking to move back over the .500 mark in 2018.

“We’re looking to improve every week,” said Lake Forest coach Freddie Johnson. “And have a better record than last year.

The Spartans have the experience to do that.

They return eight starters on the offensive side of the ball and eight more on defense.

Lake’s option offense will be led by senior fullback Isaiah Johnson and senior running back Ja-Juan Reid. Seniors Jene Sample and Jaden Rivera will line up at wide receiver or tight end and senior Chris Allen is back as the primary kick and punt returner plus will see time at running back.

Senior center Seth Fleming along with juniors Kristopher Thompson and Wade Brooks return on the offensive line.

Thompson and Sample also started on the defensive line last year. Rivera is also a starter at defensive back.

Other defensive starters who return include senior linebacker Matt Maloney, senior defensive end Marcellus Griffey, senior safety Shyron Salandy, junior defensive lineman Riley Tatlor and junior linebacker Dylan Auen.

Salandy will also quarterback the offense for the first full season.

“He did not start last year but he took a lot of snaps throughout the year,” Johnson said.

Some key newcomers are both sides of the ball are seniors Chris Kennedy (RB/DE), Ja’Meal Acree (OL/DL), Colin Shockley (OL/DL) and Desmond Benson (OL/DL) along with juniors Zyaire Elliot (LB), Jason Harris (OL/DL) and Malichi Moore (WR/DB).

Lake Forest kicks off the season on Saturday with an afternoon trip up to Wilmington Friends School at 2 p.m. Its home opener is the following Friday, Sept. 14 against Tatnall School at 7 p.m.

A visit to A.I. du Pont High on Friday, Sept. 21 (7 p.m.) and a home game against Caravel Academy on Friday, Sept. 28 (7 p.m.) round out the nonconference portion of Lake Forest’s schedule.

The Spartans’ final six games are all against Henlopen South opposition, beginning with an away game at Indian River on Friday, Oct. 5.
