Local roundup: Blue Hen men’s basketball team to open season at Maryland Nov. 6

The Delaware men’s basketball will open the season at Maryland on Nov. 6, the school announced on Tuesday in unveiling the Blue Hens’ nonconference schedule.

Delaware, led by third-year coach Martin Ingelsby, will kick off the season against the Terrapins at the XFINITY Center in College Park, Md.

Following a road game at Saint Peter’s on Nov. 10, the Hens will play their home opener against Chestnut Hill on Nov. 13 as part of the Delaware Invitational.

UD heads to Cornell on Nov. 15, before hosting three more games in the Delaware Invitational. The Hens welcome Wilmington University to the BCC on Nov 18, prior to facing UNCG on Nov. 23 and Louisiana Tech on Nov. 26.

UNCG and Louisiana Tech will also play at the BCC on Nov. 24 as part of the invitational.

Delaware heads to UMES on Nov. 30 and Columbia on Dec. 2, before returning home to take on Navy on Dec. 5. The Hens remain home to face Saint Francis, Pa. on Dec. 9, and after a road game at Stony Brook on Dec. 16, close their non-league slate at the BCC against Delaware State on Dec. 19.

UD will then play its 18-game Colonial Athletic Association schedule beginning on Dec. 28 at Hofstra.

College field hockey

Hens sweep CAA awards: Delaware swept the CAA weekly field hockey honors as senior Greta Nauck was named the league’s Player of the Week while Pia Freudenberger earned Rookie of the Week accolades.

Nauck finished the weekend with a CAA-leading six points on two goals and two assists. Freudenberger made a splash in her debut for the Hens by posting the game-winning goal over Ohio State while also recording an assist off a penalty corner earlier in the match.

College soccer

MEN, Pitt 6, Delaware 1: The Panthers scored five goals in the first 38 minutes in the win on Monday.

Junior Robert Campbell put the Hens (0-2) on the board when he corralled a loose ball off a corner kick from Ryan Mertz and scored from six yards out in the 56th minute.

College baseball

UD’s Ludman takes national award: Delaware rising sophomore Chris Ludman was named American Legion National Player of the Year after helping Post 1 win the state’s first national title.

He tossed two complete games at the World Series, including a two-hit shutout in the championship game. As a freshman for the Hens this past spring, Ludman tossed 43.1 innings, going 2-2 with a 3.12 ERA. He piled up 34 strikeouts and walked just 15, while making six starts.
