Local roundup: Burawski hurls Panthers by Delmar 3-2

Katie Burawski struck out 12 batters for Polytech High as the Panthers earned a 3-2 victory over Delmar High in softball on Friday afternoon.

Kylie Nagle recorded a pair of hits to lead the Panthers (1-1). Brianna Stevenson and Hailey Wich also had a hit apiece for Polytech.
Madison Lemon tripled and scored a run for Delmar. Ashlyn Tapman also scored as the Wildcats dropped to 0-3.

Smyrna 10, Middletown 1: Julia Thuer homered twice and drove in three runs as the Eagles remained unbeaten at 3-0.

Laiken Zay added two RBI and a home run for the Eagles and Kayla Wilson doubled. Payton Dixon won he third game and struck out 10.

Polytech’s Madison Mitchell connects for a hit against Delmar.

Milford 6, Woodbridge 3: Macey Myers’ two-run home run helped the Buccaneers overcome a early 2-0 deficit in Henlopen Conference Southern Division action.

Haleigh Baker had three hits for Milford who scored all of its run in its final two turns at bat. Taylor Scott had three hits, one RBI and a run scored for Woodbridge.

Sussex Academy 15, Christiana 0: Miranda McIlvaine tossed a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts for Sussex Academy.

Kylie Hutt led the Seahawk offense with three hits, three runs, three stolen bases and two RBI. Paige Tidwell knocked in three runs while Rylee Pettyjohn and Kylee Forrester each had two hits.

Baseball

Cape Henlopen 1, Lake Forest 0: Luke Johnson pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out six to lead the Vikings.

Ryan Gibbons had a pair of hits while Tim Vitella doubled. Seth Parker paced Lake Forest with two hits.

Milford 7, Woodbridge 4: Chad Reichhold singled home a pair of runs during a four-run sixth inning in the Buccaneer victory.

Brock Hilligoss earned the win in relief. Tyler Yoder drove in two runs to lead Woodbrdige.

Delmarva Christian 8, Seaford 3: The Royals scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to rally from a two-run deficit.

Girls’ soccer

Sussex Academy 2, M.O.T. Charter 1: Delaney Smith netted the game-winning goal in the second half to break a 1-1 tie.

Katherin Portillo also scored for Sussex Academy (3-1).

Sussex Tech 8, Delmarva Christian 0: Lilly Short’s four goals lifted the Ravens to their fourth win in a row.

Nicolette Phillips added two goals while Emily Laz and Zoe Rothermel each had one.

Padua 8, Delmar 0: The Wildcats fell in the nonconference contest to the defending Division I state champions.

Lacrosse

BOYS, Lake Forest 10, Sussex Tech 3: Kade Collins had a hat-trick as the Spartans won their third game of the season.

Kaidan Fullerton and Brandon Tice each scored twice for Lake Forest.

Polytech 12, Concord 2: Samuel Slater scored five times and Christopher McCallister followed with four goals in the nonconference victory for the Panthers.

Delmarva Christian 15, McKean 2: Brady Smith’s five goals led the Royals to their second win in as many games.

Hunter Smith added three goals and Chase Wilson netted a pair.

GIRLS, Cape Henlopen 19, Worcester Prep, Md. 6: Sawyer Walker scored six times as the Vikings downed an out of state opponent.

Chloe Schaeffer netted five goals and Emily Monigle scored four. Alia Marshall chipped in two goals.

Sussex Academy 11, James M. Bennett, Md. 10: The Seahawks took an 8-3 lead at halftime and held on.

Molly Martiner scored four goals and had three assists to pace Sussex Academy.

College baseball

Delaware State 9, Maryland Eastern Shore 2: Garrett Lawson threw 7.1 solid innings and the offense tied a season-high with 14 hits to lead Delaware State to a wire-to-wire MEAC victory.

Lawson, a Dover High product, allowed just five hits and two runs, while striking out a career-high 10 batters and walking just one to improve to 4-2 on the season.

Second baseman John Weglarz was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while third baseman Jared Gillis (Smyrna High) had two hits and three RBI in four at bats for the Hornets. Rich Rountree, Todd Henry and Mark Herron also had two base knocks for DSU. Herron also drove in two in the game.

Northeastern 13, Delaware 4: UD starter Brandon Walter was knocked out of the game in the third inning with a line drive and the Hens dropped the CAA contest at Northeastern.

Five different Blue Hens had hits on the day with freshman Joseph Carpenter extending his streak to 15 straight games reaching base safely with a two-RBI double for Delaware’s big hit on the day. Senior Vinny Vaccone laced his first homerun of the season in the contest.

Jordan Hutchins (Dover High) drove in a run for Delaware.

Women’s lacrosse

Kent State 21, Delaware State 6: The Hornets fell on the road to drop to 1-5 overall.

Olivia Summerville scored twice for DelState. She leads the Hornets with eight goals this season.

Emmy McGill tallied her sixth goal of the year in the contest to rank second on the Hornets. Imani Hill and Nicole Burch each scored their second goals of the season in the game.
