Local roundup: Camden-Wyoming reaches Senior League baseball District I finals

Camden-Wyoming posted a 5-1 victory over Felton-Harrington to reach the finals of the Senior League baseball District I Tournament on Tuesday evening.

Host CW (4-1) will now face Smyrna-Clayton (2-0) today at 7 p.m. needing a win to force a second game for the title. A second championship would be played 30 minutes after the end of the first one.

The District I champion advances to the state tournament, which begins on July 8 at Georgetown.

CW has won three straight games to come out of the losers’ bracket.

In Tuesday’s victory, winning pitcher Connar McEvoy struck out five in five 2/3 innings while allowing only the one run. David Dill, Josh Harvey, Braden Moran, Wesley Keeler, Alex Bauer, Brayden Bushweller and Nathaniel Garrison all had hits.

Gabe Martin had two hits for Felton-Harrington.

Smyrna-Clayton 13, Felton-Harrington 3: Smyrna-Clayton advanced to the finals with the win on Monday.

Connor Bartlett went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles while Zach Lewis had two hits and four runs scored. Winning pitcher Kyle McVey gave up only one hit before Derek Davis pitched two innings and added a double with a pair of RBI.

Casey Murray, who doubled, McVey and Dwayne Ratcliff all added hits.

Deak Deakins Tournament

M.O.T.-Red 11, Camden-Wyoming-Gold 3: M.O.T.-Red won the Deak Deakins title with the win on Tuesday.

M.O.T.-Red finished 3-0 in the tournament, allowing a total of only seven runs.

CW-Gold went 3-1 in the tourney. It got multiple hits from Quade Cummings, Sebastian Santa, Aidan Schmidt and Colton Gilbert in Tuesday’s loss.

Softball

Machine Pitch Tournament

M.O.T.-Blue 9, Felton-Harrington 7: M.O.T.-Blue captured the District I title with the win on Tuesday night.

Peyton Hungerford, Katie Pinand, Kaley Arrowsmith, Ava Petrucci, Kaysa Johnson and Sophie Miller all had multiple hits for the Middletown-area squad while Abby Kirby had a double to deep left.

Senior League

Game postponed: Smyrna-Clayton’s District I tournament game with Camden-Wyoming was postponed by rain in Middletown on Tuesday night.
The two squads are now slated to play today at 8:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to Friday’s winners’ bracket finals.

Tennis

Brengle back on court today: After upsetting the No. 16 seed in her first match, Dover’s Madison Brengle returns to the courts at Wimbledon early this morning.

Brengle will take on Karolina Muchova on Court 17 in a match slated to start at 6 a.m. U.S. Eastern time. Brengle is ranked 85th in the world while Muchova is No. 68.

The 29-year-old Brengle is trying to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the second time in the last three years. She is 4-4 all-time at the Grand Slam event.

On Monday, Brengle knocked off French Open finalist, Marketa Vondrousova, in her opening match.

Brengle has never faced Muchova, a 22-year-old from the Czech Republic. Muchova goes into today having won 20 of her last 28 matches.
