Local roundup: Cook leads Wesley to 3-1 victory in hockey opener

Freshman Madison Cook tallied a pair of goals to pace Wesley College to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in its field hockey season opener on Saturday.

Vanessa Santoleri also scored for the Wolverines, who netted the final three goals of the contest to overcome an early 1-0 deficit.

Wesley held a 6-3 edge in shots as Cook, a Middletown High grad, took three shots. Virginia Wesleyan finished with an 8-4 edge in corners.

MEN, Wesley 1, Hood 1: Justin John-Langba netted a first-half goal for the Wolverines but it didn’t hold up in the tie on Saturday.

Jason Sommer made six saves for Wesley, which out-shot Hood, 23-17. The Wolverines’ Darius-David Robinson took eight shots, including five on goal.
