Local roundup: Delaware State falls to Longwood 89-73 in men’s hoops

Delaware State wrapped up a four-game road swing to begin the season with an 89-73 loss to Longwood in men’s basketball on Friday evening.

Fahim Jenneto and Saleik Edwards led Delaware State with 17 points each, while former Sussex Tech High star Kevin Larkin scored 13 points in his season debut for the Hornets. Larkin missed the first three DSU games due to injury.

Jenneto was 7-for-8 from the field in his career-high scoring performance, while Edwards knocked down four three-point field goals in the game. Larkin also led the Hornets with eight rebounds.

Longwood scored the first nine points of the game, and opened up a 23-6 lead with 15:22 left in the first half.

The Hornets trailed 34-15 before mounting a run midway through the first half. DSU scored 18 of the next 21 points and pulled to within 37-33 on a three-ball by Jonathan Mitchell at the 6:15 mark of the half.

Longwood began to pull away again early in the second half, opening up a 61-48 lead.

The Hornets could pull no closer than 10 points the rest of the way. Longwood led by as many as 21 down the stretch.

Saint Vincent 81, Wesley 67: The Wolverines dropped their opening game of the two-day Marietta College Shrine Tournament on Friday.

Brian Cameron led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting. He knocked down four three-pointers and added a pair of free throws. Cameron also pulled down a team-high six boards along with two steals and two assists.

Evan Anderson and Tyrone Craven each tallied 13 points respectively. Craven dished out a team-high seven assists and added four rebounds and two steals.

WOMEN, Montana State 69, Delaware 60: The Blue Hens grabbed momentum a few times throughout the game, but a slow first quarter eventually hindered Delaware in its loss to Montana State in the Preseason WNIT at Texas State’s Strahan Arena.

Junior Samone DeFreese led the Hens (0-2) with 20 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals and two assists before fouling out with 28 minutes of play.

Freshman Jasmine Dickey added her second straight game with 10-plus rebounds and finished the night with 11 rebounds and eight points and also fouled out with 30 minutes logged.

Messiah 64, Wesley 40: The Wolverines dropped their opener in the Hampton Inn Tip-Off to the host Messiah Falcons on Friday.

Stacey O’Neale tallied a team-best 11 points while Monshea Newsome-Murray and Shelby Johnson each notched 10 points apiece. Johnson pulled down a team-high nine rebounds while Newsome-Murray recorded six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

O’Neale, Jameshia Baker and Megan Shacklock all grabbed three rebounds respectively. Baker chipped in with four points while Sydney Pederson had three points.
