Local roundup: Delmarva Christian edges Lake Forest 2-1 in boys soccer

Layton Rush netted two goals as Delmarva Christian rallied for a 2-1 victory over Lake Forest High in boys’ soccer on Monday.

Rush tied the game at 1-1 in the second half before adding the game winner in overtime. Delmarva Christian out-shot Lake Forest, 8-7.

Cael Moyer scored a first-half goal for the Spartans with Jackson Massey making five saves.

Sussex Academy 3, Worcester Prep, Md. 0: Michael Daniello scored the Seahawks’ first goals in their non-conference victory.

Ryan Burke also scored for Sussex Academy, which finished with advantages of 16-7 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.

Field hockey

William Penn 2, Caesar Rodney 0: The Colonials tallied a pair of first-half goals in topping the Riders.

Charlyze Black made 16 saves for CR, which was out-shot, 18-10. The Riders held a 5-4 edge in corners.

Laurel 8, Worcester Prep, Md. 1: Peyton Givans scored three goals to pace the Bulldogs.

Elya Niblett added a goal and three assists as six different players scored for Laurel.


Caravel 3, Dover 1: The Senators won the first set before dropping a 17-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 decision to the Buccaneers.

It was the first loss of the season for Dover (7-1).

First State Military 3, Howard 0: The Bulldogs downed the Wildcats by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-18.

College volleyball

Delaware 3, Charleston 0: After a tight first set, the Blue Hens swept Charleston, 31-29, 25-22, 25-17, to move above .500 in the CAA.

Senior Maria Bellinger went 19-of-53 to hit .340 to go along with six digs, two blocks and a service ace. She did not make an error until her 48th swing of the night to pace Delaware (2-1 CAA, 10-4 overall).

AEC honors Wolverines’ Burg: Wesley College senior setter Lindsay Burg was named the AEC Player of the Week.

Burg posted four double-doubles to help the Wolverines to a 4-0 week, totaling 132 assists, 86 digs, 10 kills, and five service aces. Her top match was was against Farmingdale State, sending out 49 assists with 39 digs. The 49 assists marked a Wesley single-match record.

College soccer

Wesley’s Calderelli honored: Wesley College’s Emily Caldarelli earned her second AEC Player of the Week honors of the season.

Caldarelli had a six-point effort against Washington Adventist with a goal and four assists. She now has 22 career assists, breaking the school record in just 23 games.
