Local roundup: Dixon strikes out 10 in Smyrna’s 8-1 softball win over Seaford

Payton Dixon struck out 10 to lead Smyrna High to an 8-1 victory over Seaford High in a Henlopen Conference softball battle on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles improved to 11-1 on the season. They remained unbeaten against instate opponents.

Julia Thuer tripled and drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles. Sara Miller and Devin Williams each recorded two hits.

Caesar Rodney 4, Cape Henlopen 1: Gracie Tuxward’s 10 strikeouts paced the Riders to a road victory.

Caesar Rodney opened the game with a run in the first inning to lead wire-to-wire. Ryleigh Elliott had a RBI-double to lead Cape Henlopen.

Sussex Central 10, Milford 7: Kate Evick, Devan Hudson and Mya James each had two-hit games to lead the Golden Knights.

Evick and James also added a double for Sussex Central. Macey Myers went 3-for-3 for Milford with a double, a triple and three RBI.

Delmarva Christian 18, M.O.T. Charter 3: Jordyn DiFava had a big day as she recorded the 100th hit of her career in the Royal victory.

DiFava finished the games with three hits, three runs and three RBI. Ashlyn Stonebraker contributed three hits and five RBI for the Royals.

Siera Jones and Erin Parker each had two hits and two RBI while Kandice Schlabach had two hits and three runs scored.

Newark Charter 2, Polytech 1: Polytech scored a run in the first for the early lead but Newark Charter won it with two runs in its final turn at-bat.

Delmar 4, Lake Forest 2: The Wildcats captured the win over their Henlopen South rivals on Tuesday.

Sussex Tech 8, Laurel 1: The Ravens earned the victory on Tuesday afternoon.


Dover 11, Woodbridge 1: Alec Rodriguez drove in four runs and Chris Dabney followed with three RBI for the Senators in the Henlopen Conference matchup.

Andrew Carney picked up the win with six strikeouts in three innings of work. Dabney reached base three times at the plate while Nate Turner knocked in a pair of runs and Hiram Davis went 2-for-2 with a RBI.

Brock Keeler, Kolby Rust and Tyler Yoder each had a hit for Woodbridge.

Milford 3, Sussex Central 2: Mason Morris hit a walk-off single to win the game in the bottom of the seventh for the Buccaneers.

Brock Hilligoss pitched all seven innings with five strikeouts to earn the win. Hilligoss also scored the winning run.

Kyle Briggs pitched six no-hit innings for the Golden Knights with nine strikeouts. Briggs hit two doubles and drove in a run at the plate.

Cape Henlopen 6, Caesar Rodney 2: Luke Johnson improved to 5-0 on the season as he struck out eight and scattered four hits.

The Vikings scored all six of their runs in the fourth inning. Johnson had two RBI and Robbie Baxley had a RBI-triple.

Brandon Hatch was 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead Caesar Rodney.

Delmar 13, Lake Forest 8: The Wildcats scored nine runs in the top of the seventh for a come-from-behind victory.

Luke Waters and Gabe Rincon had two hits each to lead Delmar. Matt Rodriguez doubled and Dylan Rodriguez tripled.

Gabe Martin had four hits, including a triple and Tyler Noell drove in four runs for the Spartans.

Delmarva Christian 12, Indian River 2: Connor Lewis hit a two-run homer to highlight a four-run first inning for the Royals.

Ian Shaner doubled and scored a run to lead Indian River.

Sussex Tech 16, Laurel 1: All 11 players who played for Sussex Tech drove in a run as Jason Shockley, Jalen Snead and Brayden Graham each had multi-hit games.

Hodgson 8, Polytech 2: Chase Rebuck went 3-for-4 and drove in a run as Polytech fell in a nonconference matchup.


GIRLS, Caesar Rodney 20, Indian River 3: Graycie Bachman’s five goals paced the Riders while Lillian Ayers and Noelle Ruggiero contributed four goals each.

Jessica Crawford and Kyleigh Comstock netted a pair of goals apiece.

BOYS, Middletown 10, Smyrna 9: The Eagles dropped a tight nonconference contest on Tuesday.

Girls’ soccer

Polytech 5, Lake Forest 1: Paxton McGinnity provided a pair of goals and an assist to lead Polytech.

Emma Coleman, Jenna McDuff and Jaiviauna Rowley also scored a goal for the Panthers. Elle Wood had the lone goal for Lake Forest.

Sussex Academy 3, Dover 0: Katherine Portillo scored twice in the first half to lift the Seahawks to the victory.

Savannah Sistrunk netted a goal in the second half and assisted on one of Portillo’s strikes.

Caesar Rodney 9, Delmar 0: Jessie Prillaman recorded a hat-trick and two assists in the Rider win.

Macy Ramsey scored twice and added two assists.

Smyrna 9, Woodbridge 1: Hannah Osborne’s hat-trick led the Eagles while Destiny Zapata and Kelly Barr each tallied two goals apiece.

Sussex Central 2, Milford 1: The Golden Knights trailed at halftime but Kimberly Briceno scored two goals in the second half as they rallied for a victory.

College baseball

Delaware 6, St. Joseph’s 2: The Hens got a four-RBI performance out of junior Jack Goan and the pitching staff held Saint Joseph’s scoreless over the final eight innings for a nonconference victory.

Delaware (17-27, 6-9 CAA) struck first, pushing across four runs in the first inning, highlighted by Goan’s three-run homer.

Freshman Joseph Carpenter extended his hitting streak to 23 games and on-base mark to 36 contests with a base hit in the third. It marks the longest hitting streak by a Blue Hen since the 2010 season.

Jordan Hutchins (Dover High) scored a run for the Hens. Joey Haas (Polytech High) retired all six batters he faced in relief to record the victory.
