Local roundup: DSU men get first win 80-47 over St. Elizabeth, NJ

Three players scored in double figures as Delaware State downed the College of St. Elizabeth, N.J., 80-47, on Monday night at Memorial Hall to pick up its first men’s basketball victory of the season.

The win was also the first for Hornets’ coach Eric Skeeters, who started the season with four straight road games. DSU is now 1-4.

Jon Mitchell (17 points, 7 rebounds), Fahim Jenneto (15 points) and Saleik Edwards (13 points) all reached double digits for the Hornets, who built a 36-22 halftime advantage.

DelState sank 13-of-32 three-pointers in the contest as Mitchell, Jenneto and Edwards were a combined 10-for-21 from beyond the arc.

Sussex Tech High grad Kevin Larkin added eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds The Hornets held a 49-39 edge in rebounds.

The Hornets next head across the country for a game at Washington State on Saturday night.

Hens’ Dickey honored again: Delaware’s Jasmine Dickey was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for the second straight week.

Dickey averaged 13.5 rebounds and 11.5 points as the Blue Hens went 1-1 in the Preseason WNIT.

Through three games, Dickey is averaging 14.7 points and is 14th nationally with 13.0 rebounds per contest and has two double doubles.

Delaware returns to the court today with a 6 p.m. tip at Delaware State before traveling to Boca Raton, Fla. for this weekend’s FAU Thanksgiving Tournament with Bradley and Lafayette.

College bowling

DSU takes 11th in tourney: The DSU bowling team posted an 8-5 overall record for 11th place in the 17-team Hawk Classic Invitational, hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore this weekend in Millsboro.

The Hornets finished Sunday’s bracket play with a 2-1 record in Baker contests, posting two wins over Long Island Brooklyn (4-2 & 4-3), while falling to Duquesne (2-4). DSU, ranked eighth in the 2018-19 National Tenpin Coaches Preseason Poll, was 5-3 in Baker matches and 3-2 in traditional contests.

In Friday’s opening round of Baker matches, the Hornets won three and lost two, highlighted by victories over No. 4 Sam Houston State and No. 9 Fairleigh Dickinson. The Friday losses were to No. 1 Vanderbilt and No. 20 Duquesne. Delaware State was 3-2 in traditional matches on Saturday.

Individually, Alexis Neuer was tops on the Hornets and 14th out of 111 competitors with a total pinfall of 1031 (206.2 avg.). Neuer, the 2018-19 MEAC Preseason Bowler of the Year, rolled a season-high 248 vs. Long Island Brooklyn.
