Local roundup: Ex-Henlopen athletes Curl, Fisher to join Wesley College Hall of Fame

A pair of former Henlopen Conference athletes are among the 10 inductees who will be inducted into the Wesley College Athletics Hall of Fame the school announced this week.

Caesar Rodney High grad Tarah Winters Curl (cross country) and Lake Forest’s Amanda Fisher (field hockey) are joined in this year’s class by Kelly Caton Aaronson (softball), Felina Sacchetti (women’s soccer), Becky Scott (women’s lacrosse), Daniel Bunnion (baseball), Brad Evans (men’s lacrosse), Joseph B. Horn (football), Grant Morlock (baseball) and Derek Roberts-Dukes (men’s soccer).

The group will be formerly inducted on Oct. 25 during Homecoming Weekend. The new members will also be recognized at halftime of the Wesley vs. Montclair State football game on Oct. 26.

This class brings the total number of Hall of Fame inductees to 185.

Winters ‘04 was a four-time All-PAC cross country runner, earning first-team honors three times. Her best 5,000-meter time was second-best all-time at graduation (19:33, now third) and her 6,000-meter time was third-best at graduation (25:00, now seventh).

Winters was named to the CSAC 25th Anniversary Team.

Fisher ‘10 was a three-time All-CAC defender, twice making first team in 2009 and 2010. She also made the NFHCA All-American squad three times.

College volleyball

Hornets picked fifth: The Delaware State volleyball team was picked to finish fifth in the six-team MEAC North race.

Delaware State went 0-10 in the North (2-27 overall) last season but has hired Dr. Bruce Atkinson as its new coach last February.

Atkinson’s 11-year career as a college head coach is highlighted by a 217-116 overall record (.652 win percentage), multiple conference championships, five Coach of the Year awards and six 20-win seasons.

College soccer

Wesley hosting clinic: The Wesley College men’s soccer team will host its College Soccer Summer Clinic on Friday at Drass Field.

The clinic is open to high school students with varsity experience (no freshmen) and with a genuine interest in playing soccer in college.

The registration fee is $55 and includes a Wesley soccer t-shirt & light lunch. Pre-registration is requested online, but payment (cash or check) is accepted on the day.

Check-in will run from 9:45-10 a.m. at the stadium. Players need to bring soccer cleats for turf, indoor shoes shin-guards, clothing appropriate for weather conditions and a change of clothes plus water.


Major League

Pennsylvania 7, Newark National 0: The Mid-Atlantic Regional matchup was scoreless until Pennsylvania erupted for six runs in the fourth inning on Tuesday.

The loss dropped Newark National to 0-2 in the tournament being played in Bristol, Conn. and eliminated the Delaware state champions.

Newark National was limited to only two hits, getting one single apiece from Mark Spoor and Brad Marks. Pennsylvania finished with just six hits but also took advantage of five walks.

Only two Delaware squads have ever reached the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.
