Local roundup: Five pins key Senators’ dual meet win over Wildcats

Dover High collected five pins in downing Delmar, 58-18, in a non-conference wrestling match on Friday evening.

Sam Arkwuoille Jr. (182 pounds) had the quickest of those falls for the Senators, with his coming in 49 seconds.

Dover also got pins from Marquis Machado (120), Richard Fonticiella (138), Gabe Evans (170) and James Kilby (285).

Jammell Copes (132) had a first-period pin for the Wildcats.

Indian River 41, Sussex Tech 31: The Indians used five pins — including three in a four-match span — to top the Ravens in another cross-division match.

Winning by fall for IR were Chris Saylor (106), Will Rayne (120), Ta’Jon Knight (126), Rashawn Turner (152) and Zachary Schultz (195). Rayne’s pin came in just 38 seconds.

Sussex Tech got pins from Roberto Santos (138) — in just 22 seconds — Parker Selzer (145) and Josh Negron (160).

Indian River 61, Concord 14: The Indians earned a second victory in the tri-match on Friday.

Sussex Tech 58, Concord 15: The Ravens collected three pins as they evened their record at 1-1 in the tri-match.

Hunter Ruff (113), Parker Selzer (145) and Trenton Broomall (152) all won by fall for Sussex Tech, which also won five matches by forfeit.

Boys’ basketball

St. Thomas More 64, Gunston, Md. 21: The Ravens built a 43-6 halftime lead before picking up the victory.

Omari Burris netted 18 points with Joshua Hayward adding 14 for St. Thomas More (6-6).

Delmarva Christian 71, Holly Grove Christian, Md. 36: The Royals out-scored Holly Grove, 31-5, to break the game open.

Andrew Workman (20), Christopher Vanhof (14) and Seth Stevens (14) all scored in double figures for Delmarva Christian (11-1).

Delmar 62, Mardela, Md. 57: The Wildcats used a 24-11 run in the third quarter to overcome a 12-point halftime deficit.

Jeremiah Lumpkin-Beale netted 21 points with Isaiah Kane adding 13 for Delmar.

Girls’ basketball

Lake Forest 59, ECHS@DSU 11: Nakira Berry (11) and Gabrielle Almonte (10) led the Spartans (12-2), who got two points or more from 10 players.

Sussex Academy 31, Salisbury School, Md. 30: Kathryn Van Pelt tallied 11 points as the Seahawks edged Salsibury.

Local baseball

Dover holding youth session: Dover High’s baseball program is holding a community night for children in fourth through sixth grade on Feb. 27 at the school’s batting cage.

The session is free and will be held from 5-7 p.m. To reserve a spot contact coach Dave Gordon at david.gordon@capital.k12.de.us.

College basketball

Delaware 65, UNC-Wilmington 53: A 26-point performance from junior Samone DeFreese sparked Delaware to the CAA victory.

DeFreese shot 10-of-19 from the floor while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line. The forward added a season-best 11 rebounds for her seventh career double-double and her first of the season.

Makeda Nicholas also reached double figures with 11 points for the Blue Hens (7-11, 2-4 CAA).

In a game that saw six lead changes and four ties, the two teams were tied 28-28 at the half. DeFreese gave the Blue Hens the lead for good with the second half’s first basket just 20 seconds in.
