Local roundup: Foul negates basket at buzzer as UD women fall to Gardner-Webb

Delaware’s Abby Gonzales hit a running jumper at the buzzer but the basket was waived off, sending the Blue Hens to a tough 67-65 loss to Gardner-Webb in women’s basketball on Sunday afternoon.

Down by two with five seconds left on the clock, Gonzales drove the ball the length of the court to score as time expired. The shot went in, but the officials called an offensive foul on Gonzales to negate the basket.

A back-and-forth affair throughout, the lead changed 13 times with seven ties. Neither team led by more than seven in the contest.

Senior Samone DeFreese led Delaware (3-6) with a season-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds. Senior Nicole Enabosi added 13 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Jasmine Dickey recorded 10 points with six assists.

Longwood 78, Delaware State 62: The Lancers out-scored the Hornets, 37-25, in the second half to pull away to the victory.

Lyric Turner netted 16 points for DelState with Sarajah Collins adding 14. The contest featured three ties and three lead changes.
