Local roundup: Golden Knights triumph in softball, baseball

Sussex Central High scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the sixth en route to a 9-1 victory over Lake Forest in Henlopen Conference softball on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights finished with 12 hits, getting three apiece from Macey Hayes and Talor Evick. Morgan Burton added a homerun.

Winning pitcher Kaisey Reed struck out nine.

Brittany Baker had three hits, including a double, to lead Lake Forest.

Polytech 5, Milford 4: Madison Hazen drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh as the Panthers rallied for their third straight win.

Kaite Burawski threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and added two hits at the plate. Kylie Nagle had two more of Polytech’s 11 hits.

Courtney Kohel, Emily Sickles and Haleigh Baker had the Buccaneers’ hits.

Smyrna 13, Laurel 1: The Bulldogs got a homerun from Rachel Calloway in the top of the first but the Eagles answered with nine runs in the bottom of the inning.

Sara Miller, Madison Drummond, Lexi Moore and Kayla Wilson (3-for-3) all had two RBI with Olyvia Smith striking out six in three innings to take the win.

Newark Charter 2, Caesar Rodney 1: The Patriots broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Lauren Scott had three of the Riders’ six hits.

Girls’ soccer

Caesar Rodney 3, Sussex Tech 2, OT: The Riders scored all three of their goals in the final 25 minutes to pull out the Henlopen North victory in overtime.

Macy Ramsey’s second goal, in the 87th minute, gave CR the win. Megan Powers tied it at 2-2 with a goal in the 76th minute.

The Riders finished with advantages of 14-6 in shots and 9-3 in corner kicks. Morgan Desaulniers made three saves for CR, which has won two North games in OT this season.

Hannah Murphy and Nicolette Phillips scored for Sussex Tech while Valencia Whealton stopped 10 shots.

Smyrna 1, Dover 0: Hannah Osborne’s goal early in the game stood up as the Eagles improved to 3-0 in the North.

Goalie Cassidy Cook made 11 saves to earn the shutout for Smyrna.

Cape Henlopen 3, Sussex Central 0: The Vikings netted all three of their goals in the first 18 minutes of the North win.

Madalyn Swontek, Brayden Fannin and Lindsey Swontek (1 assist) scored for Cape, which finished with advantages of 17-1 in shots and 6-0 in corner kicks. Macey Hamm made 14 saves for the Golden Knights.

Indian River 6, Lake Forest 1: Isabella Binko (1 assist) netted three goals with Anastasia Diakos (1 assist) adding two as the Indians pulled away to the South victory.

Samantha Whelen (1 assist) also scored for IR, which tallied the game’s final five goals to break a 1-1 tie. Fabrea McCray made three saves as the Indians outshot the Spartans, 21-3.

Alexa McCracken scored for Lake Forest.

Sussex Academy 4, Milford 0: Eighth-grader Lilly Short netted the Seahawks’ lst three goals in their South win.

Angeliki Rigakos tallied Sussex Academy’s first goal.

Delmar 10, Seaford 0: Logan Walls (1 assist) netted three goals and Ashlyn Carr (1 assist) scored two in the Wildcats’ South win.


Smyrna 14, Laurel 1: The Eagles broke open the conference contest with eight runs in the fourth.

Logan Strickland (3-for-3, 2 doubles, 4 RBI), Andrew Unterreiner (2-for-2, homer, 3 RBI), Jeremy Carrow (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Drew Whitlock (2 RBI), Larsen Wilson (3 runs) and Nate Ridgeway (double, 2 runs) paced Smyrna’s 10-hit attack.

Winning pitcher Hunter Barr and Dylan Leager combined to throw a five-inning two-hitter.

Conor Ellingsworth and Holden Deihm had the Bulldogs’ hits.

Sussex Central 8, Lake Forest 1: The Golden Knights broke open the Henlopen Conference matchup with a four-run fifth.

Winning pitcher Trevor Collins and reliever Dorin Emerick combined to throw a three-hitter.

Delmarva Christian 2, Sussex Academy 1: Brandon Schlabach singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Royals rallied for both runs in their final at-bat.

Riley Culver pitched a complete-game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts to pick up the win.

Ryan Bishop took a shutout into the seventh for the Seahawks with Ronald Faust scoring their run.


GIRLS, St. Thomas More 8, Del. Military 4: Sophia Stafford and Zoe Kelly netted three goals apiece to lead the Ravens.

Jessica Simmons added the other two goals with Madison Murrian making seven saves.
