Local roundup: Hens top Hornets in baseball, UD women win

Behind a five-run seventh inning, Delaware defeated in-state rival Delaware State, 9-5, in baseball on Saturday afternoon at windy Bob Hannah Stadium.

Entering the home half of the seventh deadlocked at 2-2, the Blue Hens (3-4) opened up a 7-2 advantage after the five-run outburst against the Hornets (2-5). Kyle Baker roped a two-run triple down the right field line to highlight the inning.

With Delaware leading 9-2, DelState scored three two-out runs in the top of the ninth. But reliever Clay Conaway (Sussex Central) recorded the final out, stranding the bases loaded.

Senior Nick Spadafino (Dover) pitched six strong innings allowing just two runs, while Baker drove in four runs.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 81, Towson 55: The Blue Hens (11-7 CAA, 18-11 overall) closed the regular season with a CAA victory.

Junior Nicole Enabosi registered her 22nd double-double of the season by finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Samone DeFreese added 19 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The Hens’ 18 wins are their most since the 2013-14 campaign when Delaware went 20-11. Delaware’s CAA 11 victories are its most since going 18-0 in 2012-13.

The Hens used a 15-0 run to close out the first quarter while shooting .714 (10-for-14) from the floor.

College lacrosse

MEN, Villanova 13, Delaware 12: The Wildcats (5-0) scored the final two games of the game to pull out the victory.

Dean DiSomone netted five goals for the Blue Hens (3-1) with Bryce Reid adding four.

Mount Union 4, Wesley 3: The Purple Raiders built a 4-2 halftime lead before holding off the Wolverines.

With just under 10 minutes left, Chris Smith scored to cut the Mount Union lead to 4-3 but the Wolverines (1-2) couldn’t get any closer.

Josh Wassum paced Wesley with two goals and an assist. Carlin Fernandez picked up a team-high five ground balls.

WOMEN, Wesley 26, Gwynedd Mercy 17: For the second-straight game, the Wolverines set a school scoring record in the win.

Wesley’s 26 goals better their 25-goal performance on Feb. 24 against Cedar Crest.

Fallon Fore notched eight goals and corralled 12 draws for the Wolverines (2-0), both one shy of tying school records. Brianna Bacon tallied five goals while Paige Brehm scored four.

Goalie Shelby Schirmer stopped 10 shots for her second win of the season.

Georgetown 12, Delaware 8: Seniors Megan Santoleri and Becky Gohsler combined for five goals in the Blue Hens’ loss.

Santoleri posted her third career hat trick and added a draw control for Delaware (2-3).

College softball

Delaware 6, Ball State 5: Blue Hen senior Giovanna Kolofer worked a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring home the winning run.

Mariah Kondravy finished 3-for-4 for Delaware (2-9), including two doubles to set the UD career record with 48 two-baggers. Leanna Gearhart went 2-for-2 with two walks, while Steinmetz finished with two hits and two RBI.
