Local roundup: Hood’s goal carries Wolverines to 1-0 men’s soccer win

Nicholas Hood’s first-half goal lifted Wesley College to a 1-0 victory over Wilson in men’s soccer on Tuesday evening.

Darius-David Robinson assisted on the goal at the 37:24 mark for the Wolverines (3-0) which got one save from goalie Jason Sommer.
Wesley finished with advantages of 13-7 in shots and 5-4 in corner kicks.

Two Wolverines honored: Wesley College senior forward Chimaobi Ikwuagwu and junior defender Matthew Dina were named the first-ever Atlantic East Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.

Ikwuagwu (Caesar Rodney) earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring three goals to total six points in two games. Dina was tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Week after Wesley held its first two opponents to one goal.

College field hockey

Wesley players earn league honors: Wesley College junior midfielder Alexiss Hulse and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Berry were announced as its first-ever Atlantic East Conference Field Hockey Players of the Week on Monday

Hulse earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after recording two goals in Wesley’s 3-0 shutout of Washington (Md.) on Friday and dished out an assist in Wesley’s 3-2 win over McDaniel on Sunday.

Berry was named the Defensive Player of the Week after tallying 17 saves in Wesley’s 2-0 start to the season. In Wesley’s 3-0 season-opening win against Washington, Berry stopped nine shots en route to her first collegiate shutout.

Hens drop to No. 12: After back-to-back losses to ranked teams, the Delaware field hockey squad fell from No. 9 to No. 12 in this week’s Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.

Delaware received 576 points and dropped three spots after falling to No. 18 Saint Joseph’s and No. 8 Louisville.

The Hens hit the road for two games in College Park, Md. this weekend as Delaware takes on No. 3 Maryland on Saturday at 11 a.m. and American at 3 p.m. on Sunday as part of the Terrapin Invitational.

College football

Dover grad Sample honored: Dover High grad Tavarus Sample, a senior defensive back on the Slippery Rock football team, was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week.

In a 38-31 win over Kentucky State, Sample came up with two of the biggest defensive plays of the day for The Rock when he recorded a pair of interceptions in crucial situations.

His first takeaway came in the third quarter with the game tied at 28-28 and was returned 62 yards deep into KSU territory to set up the go-ahead touchdown. His second pickoff of the day came on Kentucky State’s last possession and sealed the victory.

College volleyball

Wesley’s Clifford wins award: Wesley College sophomore libero Caelli Clifford was named the first-ever Atlantic East Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Clifford was named to the All-Tournament team at the Moravian Greyhound Premiere after collecting 88 digs in Wesley’s four matches. Clifford also tallied five assists, four service aces and a pair of kills.

Clifford leads the Atlantic East in digs (88) and digs per set (7.33).
