Local roundup: Hornets fall to Coppin State 11-5 in MEAC North baseball

Coppin State scored the game’s first nine runs and never looked back in an 11-5 victory over Delaware State in the finale of a three-game MEAC North baseball series on Sunday.

The division-leading Eagles won two of three series games to improve to 18-14 overall and 11-4 in the MEAC. The Hornets fell to 11-20 and 6-9.

Delaware State had 11 hits in the game, including three by Tommy Jordan (Milford). Jared Gills (Smyrna) had two hits and three RBI in five at-bats, while John Weglarz and Mark Herron also collected two hits for the Hornets.

UD swept by Phoenix: Elon limited Delaware to just seven hits and one run in 16 innings in sweeping the Blue Hens, 4-1, 6-0, in a CAA doubleheader on Sunday.

Delaware (5-7 CAA, 12-23 overall) scored only two runs in three weekend losses to the Phoenix (10-2, 21-15). The Hens have lost four in a row.

Vinny Vaccone (3-for-3) and Joseph Carpenter (2-for-4) accounted for five of the Hens’ six hits in the nightcap. Carpenter’s solo homerun was UD’s only hit in the seven-inning opener.

College softball

Elon 8, Delaware 3: Elon scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a close game.

Delaware (4-8 CAA, 18-22 overall) got two runs back in the top of the seventh when Hanna Garber and Halle Kisamore each walked before Brooke Glanden (Lake Forest) ripped a two-run double to rightcenter.

Glanden finished 2-for-4 while Garber, Kisamore, Brittney Mendoza, Ali Davis and Karolina Flores added a hit apiece.

College golf

Hens take 2nd in CAAs: Delaware finished in second place while three Blue Hens placed among the top 11 individuals as UD concluded its spring season this weekend at the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.

After carding 315 and 307 scores during the first two days of the tournament, Delaware fired a 313 on Sunday to finish second out of eight teams with a 935 total. UNCW captured the league title with a 918 score.

UD senior Ashley Dingman shot a six over par 78 during her final round on the par 72, 6,103-yard Reserve Club course at St. James Plantation, finishing in ninth place with a 15 over par 76-77-78-231.

College lacrosse

WOMEN, Elon 9, Delaware 8: The Blue Hens never trailed by more than two goals and tied the contest in three separate occasions before suffering the CAA loss.

Mia DeRuggiero led Delaware with four points on two goals and two assists to go along with three ground balls and one draw control. Sarah Bedard and Claire D’Antonio also contributed two goals and two ground balls while Caroline Farley dished out two assists with two draw controls and a caused turnover.

Boys’ lacrosse

Caesar Rodney 18, St. Mark’s 1: The Riders built a 15-1 halftime lead before posting the win in the finale of the Dave Reynolds Lacrosse Festival on Saturday night.

CR was paced by Sean Wooleyhand (5 goals, 2 assists), James Cava (3 g, 2 a), Zachary Davis (2 g, 2 a), Evan McCleary (2 g, 1 a) and Brian Page (2 g, 2 a).
