Local roundup: Hornets fall to St. Peter’s 3-2 in women’s volleyball

Delaware State was a set away from victory, but faltered in the last two sets in a 3-2 loss to St. Peter’s in women’s volleyball on Wednesday evening.

The Hornets lost by scores of 21-25, 25-13, 25-23, 23-25, 12-15.

The defeat overshadowed a dominating performance by DSU freshman middle blocker Sydney Lewis, who recorded a career-high 22 kills and just one error on 29 attempts for a .714 attack percentage. Lewis’ 22 winners marked a team high this season.

She was also strong on defense, totaling nine blocks, including three solos.

Hornet setter Jelena Dukic also shined in the match, dishing out a season-bests of 53 assists and 18 digs. In addition, Jasmal Cruz recorded a career-high 30 digs to lead all players.

WOMEN, Albright 3, Wesley 0: Albright scored twice in the first half before going on to the victory.

Goalie Kiyanna Gill made eight saves for the Wolverines (2-3), who were out-shot 17-6. Kaitlyn Roazzi took two of Wesley’s shots.

College cross country

DSU’s McGhie wins award: Delaware State’s Corey McGhie was named the MEAC Runner of the Week.

McGhie finished first at the Delaware State Hornet Invitational, completing the 5K course with a time of 16:40.8. He finished just over 40 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

His performance helped the Hornets finish second in the team standings.

College basketball

Hens to face PSU in charity game: The Delaware men’s basketball team will face Penn State in a charity exhibition game on Oct. 27 at noon in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Proceeds for the Hoops 4 Disaster Relief exhibition will benefit Louisiana Tech University and Ruston, La. to help offset the extensive damage to the community and campus following an EF3 tornado on April 25.

The funds will be earmarked for assisting Louisiana Tech students, faculty, and staff who have been directly impacted by the tornado, and for rebuilding and repairing damage to campus structures and grounds.

Boys’ soccer

Sussex Academy 8, Delmarva Christian 1: The Seahawks rolled to the victory in a non-conference matchup.

Gabe Herling netted a second-half goal for the Royals.

Field hockey

St. Peter & Paul, Md. 3, Delmarva Christian 1: Goalie Mara Agapito made 14 saves for the Royals (2-1) in the loss.

Jorja Eppehimer tallied Delmarva Christian’s goal. St. Peter’s out-shot the Royals, 17-4.
